Well if you've ever wondered how a saguaro supports itself, here's the answer. The flesh of this one withered away after it died, leaving its internal 'skeleton' of woody ribs exposed for all to see.
Saguaros have between 10 and 30 of these, depending on their age. They first appear when the saguaro's about seven years old, and go increasing in number as the plant gets taller. Some woodpeckers put the welfare of the saguaro at risk by hacking through these when they dig out their nesting holes.
